Jeep Wrangler DTC P0740

Q. Dear Vincent, We currently have a 2002 Jeep Wrangler VIN# 1J4FA49S32P716334. The current mileage is 30,500 miles. This vehicle was bought used and we are unaware of any warranty that is still available on this vehicle. We have spoken with Chrysler several times and have had no definite response to the question.

After using the ignition key process, turning it on three times, the error code that is displayed is P0740. Further research has shown that this error is; P0740 Torq Con Clu, No RPM Drop at Lockup "Relationship between engine and vehicle speeds indicated failure of torque convertor clutch lock-up system (TCC/PTU solenoid)"

I have searched extensively throughout the internet for a step-by -step process to replace this individual part. I have been unable to find any reference for this application except for yours that refers to a GM vehicle. I'm in the process of acquiring the shop manuals from Chrysler, specifically for my Jeep. I am unsure if these manuals would cover the steps required to replace the solenoid. I'm sure that your schedule is quite full, any assistance would be appreciated.

We have owned this vehicle since March of this year. We have had no other error codes until now. Currently, the Jeep runs normally with no signs of the torque converter being in the locked position at idle/stop. In your opinion, until we experience any drive ability problems, can we drive short distances with this current error code?

A. Here is some information on DTC P0740.

SYMPTOM:
P0740-TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH CONTROL CIRCUIT

WHEN MONITORED:
During Electronically Modulated Converter Clutch (EMCC) Operation.

SET CONDITION:
Transmission must be in EMCC, with input speed > than 1750 RPM . TCC-L/R Solenoid achieves the maximum duty cycle and can not pull engine speed within 60 RPM of input speed. Also when the transmission is in FEMCC and the engine slips TCC > than 100 RPM for 10 seconds.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:
  • Check for misfire codes
  • Intermittent TCC solenoid
  • Check the TRANS fluid level and condition
  • Input shaft seals
  • Internal problem or TCC solenoid
  • Oil pump/shaft/seals
  • Torque converter
  • Valve body

I would think that the vehicle would still be under warranty. The Powertrain Warranty is 7 years/70,000 miles if I remember correctly on the 2002 model year vehicles. I would call Chrysler Customer Service, 1-800-853-1403 M-F 8:00AM - 8:00PM (EST), and check with them to make sure. Then inform the Dealer and they should repair the vehicle under warranty.

If they balk at that, call Chrysler back and file a complaint and make an appointment with the District Factory Representative and he will take care of it.
