Chrysler Town & Country DTC P0740
Q. Vincent, You're site is great and has been a lot of assistance, hope you can help with this one. I have a 2001 Chrysler Town & Country with a 3.8 liter engine and 59,000 miles on it that is giving off a code of P0740. I looked this up and it's "Torque Converter Clutch no RPM drop at lockup". Everything I've read so far says that it probably just needs the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid replaced.
Took it to a transmission shop and was told that there are metal shavings and pieces of the "clutch" in the pan and that the transmission most likely needs a rebuild, big bucks! The vans runs fine, shifts smooth and if the light weren't on I wouldn't have known there was even a problem.
So is this shop just trying to turn a $150.00 rear into a $1,500.00, or more, job or do I really have bigger problems?
Appreciate anything you can tell me.
Kevin
Largo, FloridaA. Well Kevin, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is the transmission probably doesn't need to be rebuilt. The bad news is the transmission will have to come out anyway.
DTC P0740 does indicate "Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) no RPM drop at lockup". What this means is the TCC is engaging, but there is no engine speed drop when it does. So the TCC is probably gone as evidenced by the debris found in the transmission pan.
