Jeep Wrangler Doesn't Go Into Gear

Q. Here is another one for you. What would the problem be if your car won't go into gear when it is running but if it is off. It will slide in gear just fine. I am thinking it is a slave cylinder. It doesn't seem like it would be the clutch since it does go into gear when it is not running.

  • 1998 Jeep Wrangler
  • 4.0 liter
  • Manual Transmission
  • 120,000
  • Fuel Injection
  • ABS
  • P/S, A/C, Cruise control

Thanks again,
Brian

Jeep Wrangler Doesn't Go Into Gear

A. I would say bad clutch. When the engine is not running the transmission is not turning so it will slide into gear just fine. You can't actually see the push rod of the slave cylinder so it will be difficult to see if it is pushing out, but it wouldn't hurt to put one in and try it.

If it doesn't solve the problem and the clutch has to be replaced, you haven't lost anything since you should replace the slave cylinder when you replace the clutch assembly anyway.
