Ford Explorer Lost Power, No Start

Driving home on the freeway 15-20° uphill, about 65 to 70 mph, start to lose power down to about 45 mph. Felt like I was out of gas, let go of throttle and reapply throttle slowly. Low power is felt, enough to crest hill and roll to gas station. Fill up, 12 gallons, drive home slowly, 2 miles.

In the driveway idled fine but slow to "RevUp". Visual check, all looked okay. Turned off could not restart. Next day opened return line. Fuel available with air bubbles, bled system reinstalled return line. Started but still slow rev. Compressed in drive with brakes on could only get to 1,200 rpm. Turned off, checked visually all looked okay.

Car will not start! Fuel pressure 40 psi with air bubbles at schreader valve located at fuel rail. Fuel pump will not turn off, runs as long as key is on! MAF reads correct voltage per Chilton, TBP reads okay with ohmmeter sweeps cleanly. Fuel filter okay but changed anyway.

Changed fuel pump, at least now the fuel gauge works, the float was filled and sank to the bottom of the tank and reading empty all the time. Still will not start. Noid lite indicates the injectors are firing. Remove air hose from MAF to throttle body and sprayed starting fluid into throttle body the engine runs as long as you spray fluid but stops as soon as you stop!

Help!

A. There are two things you should check, the first is the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Try giving the MAF a good cleaning. Ford Expedition P0171 & P0174 has the procedure for doing it.

If that fails to resolve the problem, I recommend dropping the exhaust system at the exhaust manifold and see if it runs. You may have a clogged catalytic converter.

Have you checked the PCM for codes? There may be stored codes that will help pinpoint the problem.
