Ford Explorer Cylinder 1 Misfire

Q. Hi, I have a 1996 Ford Explorer, 4.0 V-6. It has a miss when idling, and sometimes when I'm driving it kind of misses. A while back I replaced one of the sensors in the exhaust, because there was a lot of carbon blowing out which stopped the carbon. The miss continued, I changed another piece under the hood that the Ford garage around here told me to try, after hooking it on their computer. That wasn't the problem either.

I changed a fuel filter, plugs, wires, and the coil pack. I'm running out of ideas, except maybe the catalytic converter? AutoZone's computer said it was a misfire on cylinder 1 but I've tried all I can think of. I checked the Mass Air Flow sensor and it's good. Any ideas would help.

A. I would check the compression to be sure it is not due to worn engine parts or a tight valve. Then, assuming the secondary ignition system is good, the problem would be a bad or clogged fuel injector. An injector cleaning may clear up the problem.
