Jeep Wrangler Intake Backfires
Q. My Jeep backfires through the intake. What could possibly be the cause for this? I was reading in Feel, Hear, See, Smell: Part Two and was looking at some of the causes. How can I determine if it is one of those conditions? I am pretty sure that it is not the spark plugs in the wrong. A mechanic at Pep Boys said that either my injectors or my valves are going bad. I don't remember which one he said.
Could this be a cause of the backfiring? Also I was getting a new camshaft put in there about a month ago and one of the mechanics found some metal at the bottom of my oil pan. Any clue what that could be? It was a soft flimsy metal kind of like solder. He said it could be a bearing. Sounds like a real cherry, huh?

Thanks for reading and any help is much appreciated.
A. It sounds like you may have an intake valve hanging open or burnt up. The best thing to do at this point is to do a compression test. This will confirm and locate which cylinder(s) have the bad valves.
The material that was found at the bottom of the oil pan could very well be bearing material, but I would have to see it to be certain.
