Ford Explorer Dies But Restarts
Q. Hi Vincent, I have a:
- 1998 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer
- 4.0 liter
- Automatic transmission
- 140,777 miles
- Fuel injection
- ABS brakes
- P/S, A/C
But, I'll get it to the side of the road and turn it off then restart and it apparently resets something, because it works fine for a day or two. I've taken it to the Ford Dealer here in Ankara, Turkey. They have run diagnostics a few times. It came up with 12/13 errors one time, then they ran it again the same day and no errors.
We/They think it is possessed, i.e. fix action - exorcism. They don't know what to do next. Although they suggested replacing spark plugs and spark plug cables. I wanted to get another opinion, as I replaced these last year.
The latest incident, it cut off at about 55 mph, I had Check Gage and Battery indicator lights. But, again I stopped and restarted, and it was fine since yesterday (1 Oct). From what I've read on some of the other 63 pages, it could be fuel filter, fuel pump pressure & volume, fuel injectors are dirty.
I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks,
EdA. Well if it is possessed, you should be contacting a Priest, not me. Heaven doesn't want me and Satan is afraid I'll take over.
A problem like this will be tough to track down since whenever it is checked, everything will check out as good.
Before doing anything else, I would recommend cleaning the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. They have been a widespread problem for Ford and is always a good thing to do before looking for another problem. The MAF is prone to getting dirty and one of my other readers came up with an excellent fix for it.
I have covered this question many times before. Here is where you will find the answer.
