Dodge Ram 1500 Surging At Speed

Q. I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 2WD. For some time now it's been running rough. It idles fine and accelerates fine but when your trying to maintain a constant speed it kind of jumps back and fourth. It seems to actually accelerate for a brief moment when it does this because the tachometer jumps up a bit each time.

It does this at any speed with or without the cruise control on. I haven't tried anything yet except some fuel injector cleaner which didn't help. Do you think it could be an EGR valve or something like that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

A. It is very possible that this issue could be caused by the EGR valve. A sticking valve or fouled passage can cause this kind of operation. It would certainly be worth your time to remove the valve and inspect the ports for carbon fouling and verify operation of the valve as this is a matter of routine maintenance.
