How Many Parts In The Average Car?

Q. Mr. Ciulla, I have a quick question for you, hopefully it is quick. I have looked all over the web for an idea of how many parts are typically needed on average to manufacture a car. Do you have any idea? I am just looking for a general number, 1,000, 10,000 or 50,000. I am working on my MBA and have a case I am preparing regarding Ford's move to made to order vehicles and their attempt to mimic Dell Computer's model. Please let me know if you have any information.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Steve

How Many Parts In The Average Car?

A. That is a very interesting question. I guess the answer would depend on what you consider a part. Would you count, for example, a piston as one or six parts? Two bumpers? One trim clip?

As an educated guess, I would say there is about 1,700 to 2,200 parts in the average vehicle.
