Ford Taurus SE DTC P1744

Q. Hello Vincent, I own a 1998 Ford Taurus SE 3.0 liter DOHC V-6 and automatic transmission. I have been experiencing a grinding noise coming from the drive train area. A friend at work said sounds like the transmission. This noise occurs only when the engine is cold, at initial startup and goes away a few seconds later. Then when in gear occurs in first and sometimes second gear.

After the car warms up this noise does not occur. One mechanic said could be torque converter. The Service Engine Soon light came on a few months ago and had someone do a problem code check and it recorded number P1744.

I looked this up on the net and information seems to point to torque converter clutch solenoid. I am hearing repair price ranges from $350.00 to $1,200.00 dollars depending on if transmission is pulled etc.

My question; can just a bad solenoid cause this or does the whole converter need replacing? Meaning the higher price range for repair? This noise started around last December. No loss in performance is experienced.

A. Although it's difficult to determine whether or not your TCC is at fault, replacing the solenoid only should not cost that much. I recommend that a transmission fluid change should be tried first as the expense is much less, a part of routine maintenance, and all this could be caused by old or improper transmission fluid. It should be worth a try prior to undergoing repair actions.

There is a TSB out for this problem. I would let your Ford Dealer look at it for you.

Transaxle - AX4N - Torque Converter Clutch Not Engaging and/or Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0741 or P1744 Stored in Memory

FORD:
1996-98 Taurus

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1996-98 Continental, Sable

ISSUE:
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0741 or P1744 may be stored in memory. This may be caused by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) unsuccessfully attempting to engage the torque converter clutch 5 consecutive times. The torque converter clutch may not engage if one or more of the following conditions exist:

  • Stuck converter regulator valve
  • Stuck solenoid regulator valve
  • Stuck bypass clutch control valve
  • Worn pump shaft or damaged seals
  • Incorrect Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid
  • Incorrect or damaged internal wiring harness
  • Incorrect gear ratio
