Pontiac Trans Am Low Coolant Light

Q. Hi Vincent, Recently my 1997 Pontiac Trans Am LT1 5.7 liter was running a little hot. Temperature was running above normal and the low coolant light was turning on. I took it for repair and they told me that the light needed to be replaced. They went ahead and replaced that along with the thermostat and the radiator cap.

A day later the low coolant light came on again after driving the car for a good 40 minutes. It wasn't running hot but the light was on. Six days later the car is running a little hot again and the low coolant light is on more frequent.

I don’t know the mechanics on how the coolant reserve works but what I'm curious about is if it is possible to get air in the system somehow and if it can be due to something wrong with the reserve coolant line? If not what do you think can be causing this?

Thank you for your time,
George

A. Very possible that there is air in the system. Sometimes you can tap on the reservoir to remove trapped air bubbles from the low coolant sensor. You also need to make sure there is no leaks in the system by pressure testing it. Also make sure that the electric cooling fan is working.

There are usually some bleed valves in a cooling system to release trapped air from the engine, little screws near the thermostat housing.
