Questions and Answers
Mercury Cougar FMX, C4 or C6??
Q. Hi Vincent, I need help in identifying a ford automatic transmission. Its from a 1976 Mercury Cougar with factory floor shift, 351 W motor. I need to know how to tell if its a FMX; C4; or a C6. The shift quadrant has P-R-N-D-2-1. The engine and transmission are being used in a streetrod and I need to know the transmission model to order a kick-down cable for it.
I'm sure its not a C6 and no locally knows anything about older Ford transmissions. The two local Ford dealers told me none of their mechanics were even born yet in 1976. Thats scary! if you can be of any help I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
LeoA. I always went by the transmission pan. That is the easiest way to tell.

The top photo is a C-6 transmission and the bottom photo is a C-4 transmission.

If it's not either one of these, it's a FMX transmission.
