Nissan Pathfinder Transmission Slipping

Q. Vincent, I own a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder XE 3.3 liter V-6 4x4 with 131,500 kilometers on it. When I try to accelerate at full throttle, if I need to floor it to pass someone, my engine rev's over 4,000, up to 5,000, without seeing any significant increase in speed or power. It feels like the engine is really struggling to pick up speed with the pedal that far down.

If I ease up on the gas, I get an instant restoration of power. I also noticed that with a heavy foot on the pedal, the shift into the next gear occurs at a pretty high rpm, 4,500 or higher. Any thoughts?

A. It doesn't sound good. It sounds like you have a slipping transmission. About all you can do if that is the case is try a transmission filter and fluid replacement and see if that helps.

If not, then I would have a technician drive it and confirm the slippage.
