Chevy Suburban Turbo Diesel Is Weak

Q. I have a 1996 Chevy Suburban 6.5 turbo diesel with 190,000 miles. It runs great starts great, but mileage is only 15-16. I have talked to other 6.5 diesel owners and they get around 20. I do not have much history from before 150,000 miles but I think it might have been a law enforcement vehicle.

I am wondering if the computer has been modified for some reason. I understand that this year the computer could not be changed by a chip, it had to be flashed. Is their any way to tell if it is original.

I have a 1990 Chevy 1 ton with a 6.2 liter that I put a turbo on and it has more power than the Chevy Suburban even when pulling. I am not looking for a hot rod just better mileage.

Thanks,
Eldon

A. You can let a dealer scan it and see if it has the correct program in the PCM. How's the air filter and fuel filter? These engines had lots of problems with injector pumps, but you don't mention any driveability problems.
