Honda Accord LX Idle Speed Very Low

Q. Dear Mr. Ciulla, My 1999 Honda Accord LX goes into very low and erratic idle AFTER I've warmed up, around 500 RPM. But when I turn my headlights on, along with my A/C, the idle is smooth and normal, around 800 RPM. I've changed my plugs, PCV valve, thermostat, cap and rotor, spark plug wires, distributor gasket, valve cover gasket, and air filter.

I've also replaced all the belts including the timing and balancer belts. What else could be the problem?

  • 1999 Honda Accord LX
  • 2.3 Liter Engine
  • Automatic transmission
  • 140,000 miles
  • Fuel Injected
  • ABS brakes
  • P/S, A/C, Cruise control
  • Rack & pinion steering
  • Thanks,

Commonly this is caused by a vacuum leak. I would inspect all the vacuum lines and air intake hose for cracks, proper connection and breaks. If the lines are okay, you may need to have the idle speed adjusted. This can be done by a Honda dealer with their PGM Tester.

If you had the battery disconnected, you may just need to drive it for 10 or 15 miles for the PCM to relearn the new values.
