Honda Accord Combination Switch

Q. My son has a 1988 Honda Accord LX. The headlights do not work on regular beam, just high beam, if you hold the switch forward. The backup light and tail lights do not work either. The blinkers work, front and back. We replaced all the bulbs and checked for bad wires or circuit, every thing seems fine. They say this year Honda has a combination switch which could affect these.

Do you think this is the problem? and how hard is it to replace it?

Thanks,
Dodie

A. Sounds like a bad headlight, combination, switch to me. Replacing it requires removing the steering wheel so you will need a steering wheel puller. Here's how to do it.

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Remove steering wheel.
  3. Remove steering column upper and lower attaching screws, then remove covers.
  4. On models equipped with cruise control, remove cruise control slip ring.
  5. Remove turn signal canceling sleeve.
  6. Disconnect wiring harness from switch.
  7. Remove screws securing combination switch, then remove switch.
  8. Reverse procedure to install.

Do NOT bang on the end of the steering shaft in an attempt to pull the steering wheel without a steering wheel puller. You will damage the steering shaft.
