Nissan Sentra Check Engine Light On

Q. Vincent, I own a 1997 Nissan Sentra GXE with automatic transmission, 1.6 litre engine and 94,000 miles. The other day the Check Engine Light came on and stayed on. I had it checked out by a reliable mechanic. I had fuel and fire, but the spark was red and he said it should be blue and that I would need to take the car and have the computer checked with a code scanner.

Nissan Sentra Check Engine Light On

Would you please give me your professional opinion and exactly what will happen when I take the car in to have the computer checked? Do you think this will be very expensive?

Thanks for any assistance.

A. What they will do is hook a scan tool to your vehicle and see what diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). This will give an indication of what is wrong and a start on how to troubleshoot the problem.

The cost of this depends on where you take it. If the Check Engine Light (CEL) is on steady, you can get the codes read by one of the larger parts stores such as Autozone and NAPA. Otherwise I would recommend a Nissan Dealer or someone with experience working on Nissans.

Since there is about 1,500 things that will turn the CEL on, I wouldn't even try to guess a cause.
