Jaguar XJ6L Wiper Motor Testing
Q. Hi Vincent, I am having troubles with the windshield wiper motor on my 1978 Jaguar XJ6L. I cannot find a description of how it works and therefore cannot test or fix it other than by trial and error. There are two plastic connectors mounted on the casing. One is for a three pin plug and the wires are black, brown and green, and light green.
There is power only to the light green when the wiper switch is on slow and the same when it is on fast.
The other is a five pin connector and the wires are black, black and green, orange and light green, pink and light green, white and light green. There is power to the pink and green when the switch is on slow and power to the pink and green and the white and green when the switch is set to fast. But the motor does not run.
What do the two different connectors do? How can I test the motor on the bench without plugging in the connections on the car? three wires, (red and light green, yellow and light green, gray and light green) connect the five pin connector to the brushes through the yolk.
Can you tell me what does what and the steps needed to test the assembly?
Sincerely,
GethinA. This wiring diagram will tell you where there should be power in any of the switch positions.
The five pin connector goes to the wiper motor and, according to the wiring diagram, there is no three pin connector with a black, brown/green and light green.
To bench test it, ground pin 4 of the wiper motor and apply power to 5 for low speed and pin 3 for high speed.
