Nissan Frontier DTC P1446

Q. Hi Vincent, I have a 1998 Nissan Frontier 2WD, fuel injection with a 5 speed transmission and a 2.4 liter engine. My Service Engine light came on so I went to my local auto parts store and had them check the code. It came up P1446. I found the code, thanks to your site! It says "EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve (Close)".

I take this to mean I have a valve that is staying closed. I do a lot of work on this truck myself but I am not even sure where the canister is and is the valve a part of the canister? Can I do this?

A. The EVAP canister vent control valve is located on the EVAP canister and is used to seal the canister vent. This solenoid (the EVAP canister vent control valve) responds to signals from the ECM. When the ECM sends an ON signal, the coil in the solenoid valve is energized. A plunger will then move to seal the canister vent.

The ability to seal the vent is necessary for the on board diagnosis of other evaporative emission control system components. This solenoid valve is used only for diagnosis, and usually remains opened. When the vent is closed, under normal purge conditions, the evaporative emission control system is de-pressurized and allows "EVAP Control System (Small Leak)" diagnosis.

You can try removing the valve and cleaning it out. Make sure the plunger moves in and out smoothly.

Now apply 12 volts across pins one and two. That should close the valve and no air will pass through it. With no voltage the valve should be open and air will pass through it.
