Jeep Cherokee Fuel Pump Replacement
Q. On a 1988 Jeep Cherokee, do I have to drop the fuel tank to put in a new fuel pump? Also, how do I grease the universal joints when there are no fittings?
Thanks,
RayA. It is not necessary to remove the fuel tank to service the fuel pump/sender unit.
- Remove the fuel filler cap to relieve any fuel tank pressure.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Drain the fuel tank until the gauge reads less than ¼ full using a portable gasoline storage/siphon tank, or appropriate substitute. Raise and support the vehicle.
- Disconnect the fuel vent, supply, and return hoses from their connections on the fuel pump/sender unit. Disconnect the fuel pump/sender electrical connections from the main harness.
- Using a hammer, and BRASS punch, remove the fuel pump/sender lock ring by tapping it in a counterclockwise direction. Remove the fuel pump lock ring, and the pump/sender assembly.
- Remove and discard the fuel pump "O" ring seal, and the fuel pump sock style inlet filter.
