Plymouth Voyager Transmission
Q. Dear Vincent, I need to rebuild or get rebuilt my transmission on my 1996 Plymouth Voyager with 160,000 miles. Is there any manual I can get to do it myself. I am a pretty good amateur mechanic and can't really afford a rebuilder or rebuild. I looked at Rock Auto.com and it seems they have a rebuild kit for about $70.00.
It seems like a clutch is slipping when I pulled out, plus it makes a clattering sound when first put in gear. Other than that, when it shift off that clutch, there is no noise and the vehicle works fine. Thanks, I really appreciate any help you could offer.
Jerry
A. Rebuilding a transmission has always been an "A" mechanics job. It requires measuring clearances and mathematical formulas to determine special spacers and selective washers. Measuring devices such as micrometers, calipers and dial indicators are needed. Also, a certain amount of experience is needed to be able to inspect "heavy metal" parts and determine if they are good or bad and to make adjustments.
There are special tools required to rebuild a transmission as well. Some of these tools can be costly and not readily available to the general public. All special tools can be ordered from the dealer.
I'm not trying to dissuade you from doing it, I just want you to understand what's involved. You can get a rebuild kit that has drive and driven plates, gaskets and seals, but any other part you may need will have to be ordered from the dealer separately.
Your best bet for information is the reference section in your local public library. They have the Motors Transmission manual that will take you through the job step by step.
