Nissan 4x4 Get Up And Go Is Gone

Q. Vincent, I have acquired my sons truck and I am baffled. It has lost it get up and go. It does fine after you get into third gear but first and second barely pulls a hill. It used to burn rubber (exaggerated) in all gears. Changed fuel filter, air filter, adjusted carburetor. Got any suggestions?

A. You don't mention the milage, but I'll bet it's a lot. I would try a valve adjustment and then do a wet/dry compression test and let's see what we have. We need to know if the basic engine is in good shape.

After the valves have been adjusted and we know we have good compression, I would then check the fuel pump. Take the fuel inlet hose off the fuel pump off the fuel pump and put on a vacuum gauge.

Start the engine and note the reading. It should be about 13" and steady. if the needle bounces around the diaphragm is torn and the fuel pump will need to be replaced.
