Buick Electra Falls Flat On Its Face
Q. Sir, You might find this question to be quite simple. Say, something you might hear from somebody that obviously knows nothing about cars, an amateur! If the truth must be known, I am an amateur and I'm willing to look ignorant in the pursuit to learn! Anyways, Here is my problem, and please don't tell me all I had to do is change the oil!
I have a 1971 Buick Electra 225 with a 455. It runs strong as long as you're gentle. What I mean by this is if you SLOWLY push down on the accelerator, everything is fine. However, if you try to punch it, then it will stall out! It will do this from a dead stop or when cruising at an average speed. What's the deal? Please tell me it is something low cost to repair.
Thank you, Chris
A. I have a very good idea what's wrong, how cheap it will be to fix, I don't know.
The problem is the accelerator pump inside the carburetor. It's bad and needs to be replaced. If you can find a carburetor rebuild kit, that would have a new accelerator pump in it and you would be able to just pull the top off the carburetor and replace the accelerator pump by itself.
Accelerator Pump OEM Part Number Price 2 Barrel 17051374 $19.62 4 Barrel 17053072 $19.56
