Waterproofing A Geo Tracker Top

Q. Vince, I have a 1996 Geo Tracker Convertible. My question is how to best waterproof the cloth fabric and stitch seams that are part of the zippers for the side and rear windows. I suspect the small amount of leakage at the passenger side rear window is due to water being forced back toward the zipper seam and soaking through, causing a minor drip leak.

This occurs only when driving at highway speeds and only at that location. My brother-in-law suggested WD40, uses it on his boat cover seams, but I question that choice because I wonder if a petroleum lubricant would deteriorate the stitching. Appreciate your advice.

Thanks,
Jeff

A. I don't think I would use WD40. It is, as you say, petroleum based and will deteriorate the material over time.

There are several products that will waterproof fabric. Here are a couple of links.

Nikwax

And an article on Waterproofing. I hope this helps.

Also, check with an auto detailer or body shop. I know there is something they use that works really well, but for the life of me I can't remember what it is called.
