Is it possible there is something that can be done to rectify. Because of this failure the defogging system of the windscreen is also not working. Please advise.

A. If the Control Assembly is bad, there is no way to repair it. But before I go ahead and replace the Control Assembly I would check the connections to the Control Assembly. BMW is known for their terminals getting loose and causing all kinds of intermittent problems.
