Chevy Nova Muffler Replacement
Q. Hello Mr.Ciulla: I have a 1987 Chevy Nova that I would like to replace the muffler on since it is pretty shot. I quieted it down somewhat filling the holes with steel wool and steel epoxy (my own little invention) but it is still loud and producing fumes and has to go. I am a single parent and simply cannot afford to put anything more into this car. It has been endless.
I am a petite female but I do have ambition and perseverance and think I could do this. Are you laughing yet? :) I just need to know what I need to get. The exhaust pipes are new as I had them replaced when my car was taken to an inspection station.
I have no clue as to why they did not replace the muffler also. For $205.00, they could have thrown that in. A catalytic converter was replaced about a year ago when I thought it was the muffler and they said the catalytic converter was bad. Double of that of the pipes.
Okay, rambling. I apologize. If you could point me in some sort of direction as to where to start, I would appreciate it. Thank you so much for your time and anticipated assistance. Wishing you a beautiful week.
Sincerely with blessings,
ToniA. There is a joint in the pipe just behind the rear tires. You will need a flange gasket, the short pipe over the control arm and a muffler. Some auto parts stores will offer a complete assembly muffler.
This is the best route if it's available. They are usually made of stainless steel and will last a lifetime. Two bolts hold it all on as well as some rubber hanger straps that may also need to be replaced if they are cracked.
And I applaud your efforts to DIY!!
