Ford Mustang GT Bogging Down

Q. Vince, Thanks so much for providing this service! I have a 1999 Ford Mustang GT that I purchased approximately two years ago. At that time I had no problem leaving a nice patch of rubber from a standing start. About six months ago the car felt sluggish so I tried leaving a patch but could not.

Ford Mustang GT Bogging Down

My tires needed replacing so I thought that might be why. I got new tires but it didn't make a difference. I also noticed that if I hit the accelerator too quickly the engine would "bog". I replaced the fuel and air filters, cleaned out the throttle body, and pulled a (platinum) spark plug. I also threw in some fuel injector cleaner but I don't think it did much.

After doing all I still had the "bog" but was able to leave a patch. I thought I solved my problem. However, after a week or so the car started feeling sluggish again so I tried the "patch" test. Sure enough, I was unable to leave rubber! If you feel this is injector related is there a better way to get them cleaned?

A. Sounds like you are pretty rough on your car. But you are going to make your tire store very happy.

It might be due to dirty injectors, but at 35,000 miles I doubt it. Ford has a nice on-car injector cleaner that does a good job of cleaning, so you might want to consider it. If the "bog" is still there after the cleaning, you may want Ford to scan the system to see if everything is within specs.

At 35,000 miles there shouldn't be anything seriously wrong, but the abusive treatment will cause serious problems fairly quickly.
