Mercedes Benz 300SD Questions
Q. Hello Vincent, Mark here. Before I begin, I want to say thanks for doing what you do, so, thanks for doing what you do. I recently purchased a 1985 Mercedes Benz 300SD with 88,000 on the clock. I wish to bring the vehicle to 100% of its potential. I am finding it difficult locating proprietary OEM parts (driver's floor foot rest, combo high beam, wipers, turn signal switch) at a discount or reasonable price.
Do you know of a good source for these type parts? For none proprietary I guess the Benz bin is about as good as any. Changing gears now; is any one of the following preferred over any other: Mann, Bosch, Hengst, Monark? I notice that Mann is usually the cheapest, but that of course doesn't mean it's the best choice.
Next, this car originated in Hawaii and has some sort of catalytic cannister attached. Can it be bypassed without too much difficulty, and would it be worth it? Lastly: anything I should watch out for on this car? Thanks again for helping all of us out here, and for taking the time to help me now.
Mark
A.
That canister is a "Continuous Trap Oxidizer", a catalytic converter for diesels. It kills the black smoke usually associated with diesel engines, although Mercedes Benz diesels don't smoke unless something is wrong. I don't see any harm in removing it unless your state has an emission inspection. I don't think it's illegal to remove it, but you should check first. On the other hand, there is nothing to be gained by removing it, so I would just leave it there.
I get the parts for my 1983 Mercedes Benz 300D from Performance Products. Never had a problem with getting the right parts the first time. But, some of the parts you mentioned you'll only be able to get from a Mercedes Benz dealer. As far as brand, personally, I use Mann filters and Bosch when I have a choice. Hengst is good but I never used anything by Monark so I can't offer an opinion on them.
Get good, clean fuel, oil and filter changes every 3,000 miles both fuel filters once a year, preferably just before winter starts and your 300SD will have a long and healthy life. If you live in a cold climate, I would recommend a block heater. But one that goes on the dipstick tube or radiator hose. But one that goes into the block.
