Chevy Camaro Sparking And Smoking!!

Q. I just bought a 1987 Chevy Camaro IROC Z-28. It has a 305. It ran when delivered but when he shut it off, it was the end. It turned over slow so I replaced the battery and all I saw was a spark and lots of smoke coming from a little black cylinder attached to the wire that comes out of the alternator.

Chevy Camaro Sparking And Smoking!!

No matter what I do it won't charge, jump or do anything! My Chiltons book says nothing about this cylinder or the wire coming out of the alternator. Please help before the wife kills me and junks the car!!!!

Thank you,
Walter

A. If what you are talking about looks the size of a M-80 firecracker, it's a fusible link. This link probably powers up half the car. Something took this link out. Possibly shorted wires near the starter or follow the wire from the alternator to see if it's pinched somewhere.
