Jeep Wrangler Clutch Problem?

Q. Good Day, My son has a 1995 Jeep Wrangler, 4WD 2.5 liter engine, 5-speed manual transmission. The vehicle has 122,000 miles on the original engine and clutch. We noticed the synchronizers were not operating properly. A slight scraping when changing gears. Second, third and fifth. The throw out bearing has been a little noisy. He promises no speed shifting!??

Jeep Wrangler Clutch Problem?

I previously had changed the lubricant in the transmission. I mistakenly added 75W-90 (API-GL-5) hypoid grease. The owners manual lists 75W-90 (API-GEL) gear lubricant. Is this a part of my challenge or is the clutch a better candidate? The clutch does not slip or chatter. The vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic clutch sleeve. The reservoir is full. No leaks. I changed the grease in the transmission with no change in the operation.

I am in the dog house as my son feels the incorrect lubricant is the cause for all the challenges. Care to comment? Thank you in advance for your response. No hurry, I have a family reunion this weekend. It will be next week end before I start to replace the clutch and throw out bearing.

Thanks again,
Sincerely,
Dave
Fort Smith, Arkansas

A. The gear lube is not the problem. The hypoid gear lube is a better lube than the GL-5 and can be used. However, you can NOT use GL-5 in a unit that requires hypoid gear lube. And according to my manuals, that transmission does take 75W-90 GL-5.

The synchronizers sound like they are on the way out. Nothing short of a rebuild will help that. As long as the clutch is not slipping and the throw out bearing is only a little noisy, I would let it slide until the synchronizers get so bad it won't shift. Then I would go for either a rebuild or a used transmission. Then replace the clutch and throw out bearing.

It's funny. When I was 18 I couldn't believe how stupid my Father was. But when I was 21 I couldn't believe how much he learned in three years.
