Mazda Familia Put On Hold
Q. I need your help. I have a Year 1994 Mazda Familia, automatic transmission, EFI, 1600cc. The "hold" light comes on even when the "hold" switch on the gear lever is not activated. When the "hold" comes on the engine sounds erratic when stopped in traffic. Can you please try and advise of the cause? I'm from Seychelles, a small Indian Ocean State. Your site is great.

A. That is telling you the PCM has detected a malfunction in either the engine control system or transmission control system.
To extract the codes,
![]()
- Warm engine to operating temperature. Switch ignition "OFF."
- Connect jumper wire between data link connector "TEN" and "GND" terminals.
- Switch ignition "ON."
- If codes are present, the MIL will light in patterns indicating code numbers.
- When all codes have displayed, the sequence will repeat until the jumper wire is removed.
- Record codes and repair as necessary.
- Following repairs, perform after-repair procedure.
- To erase codes from PCME memory, disconnect negative battery cable and depress brake pedal for at least twenty seconds. Reconnect battery cable.
- Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Install jumper wire between data link connector "TEN" and "GND" terminals.
- Switch ignition "ON."
- Ensure that the MIL no longer flashes malfunction codes.
- If any new codes are retrieved, repeat step 6 of inspection procedure (above). If the same code(s) recurs, recheck repair work and look for what else might cause the code(s).
Once we know what the codes are, we can fix the problem.
