Buick Park Avenue Dies Driving

Q. Hello, I have a 1992 Buick Park Avenue that just turned 200,000 kilometers. 3.8 liter supercharged V-6. Recently a problem developed where I would shut the engine off, and it would not restart. It would crank and crank, but not start. After sitting for 20 minutes, it would restart. This only happened after it was run for an extended period of time, like on the freeway, but not around town.

I could go numerous places around town, shutting it off and restarting with no problem, but if I went any distance on the freeway and then shut it off, bingo, 20 minutes before it would start.

Then it got worse. I would just be driving along and the engine would die. All the dash lights would come on like I turned the key off, but I didn't. I'd pull over, and after 20 minutes it would restart and run fine for an undetermined amount of time. I've gotten my money out of Triple A in the past few weeks.

So I call the local dealer and tell him my problem. Without hesitation he says fuel pump. So I buy a new pump and spent a Sunday afternoon taking the fuel tank out and replacing the pump. It was a good thing I did, because the strainer on the pump was so clogged it had pulled the strainer inside out and into the pump.

After I got this accomplished, the car ran 100 times smoother, better throttle response, and more get up and go. But, on the way home from my test drive, she just died. After 20 minutes, she started and I finished the ride home. Have you heard of this before? Would a dealer be able to hook me up to the computer to resolve an intermittent problem like this?

A. Probably not. It sounds to me like an ignition breakdown from temperature. Possibly an ignition module or crank sensor. Also could be a ECM going bad.
