Ford Ranger Tune-Ups

Q. Hi Vincent, I sure appreciate your web site, I wish more people would come into the chat room. I have a 1999 Ford Ranger. How often should I have a tune up?

Thank you in advance for your response.

Ford Ranger Tune-Ups

A. Serenity, what a beautiful name. And I'm sure a very beautiful women to go along with that beautiful name.

Anyway, There are three types of service listed in the maintenance manual. They are:

ROUTINE SERVICE:
This article lists maintenance items that do not follow any specific mileage interval pattern, such as "Monthly", "As required" or "Periodically".

NORMAL SERVICE:
This schedule lists maintenance recommended at specific mileage intervals for vehicles used for general transportation.

SEVERE SERVICE:
This schedule lists maintenance recommended at specific mileage intervals for vehicles used under extreme conditions.

And you know what Serenity? No one drives under "Normal" conditions. So you should use the Severe Service maintenance schedule.

Since you wanted to know tune-up specifically, I'll limit myself to those items. I would replace the air filter and fuel filter every 15,000 miles. At the same time I would replace the PCV valve and breather filter.

Ford says to replace the spark plugs at 100,000 miles. But my personal recommendation is to replace them every 30,000 miles. Replace the spark plugs and wires at 60,000 miles. There are those who will argue this, but I have found through experience that this can say a lot of money in the long run.

Another thing is the Oxygen Sensor (O2). There are those who think it should be replaced at 60,000 or 100,000 or 120,000 miles. There are some that say change it only when it goes bad. I believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So I would suggest replacing it every 60,000 miles.
