Mercury Tracer Light Bulbs

Q. Hi! I have a headlight, taillight and brake light out on my 1993 Mercury Tracer. I want to try to replace them myself although I have never done anything like this before. Do you have any suggestions?

Also, I think someone said that the taillight and brake light may come back on if I replace the headlight. Do you think this is right? I also read something about a connector. Please help if you can!

Thanks!
Jennifer

A. Here is a picture of the headlight bulb. I see no reason why you can't replace it yourself.

Pull up on the lock and remove the connector. Then turn the retainer counterclockwise and remove it. Now the bulb will come out. There may be a vacuum holding the bulb in. In that case just rock the bulb back and forth until the seal is broken and the vacuum released. To install the new bulb, just go in reverse.

Do NOT touch the glass portion of the bulb with your fingers.

If you look inside the back of the car, there should be an access panel for the rear lights. Open the panel and you will see the light sockets. Just turn then about a ½ turn counterclockwise and they will come out.

Just pull out the old bulb and replace it with the same bulb. If you don't use the exact same bulb, you will cause all kinds of screwy problems. Some of the larger auto parts stores will install the bulbs for you free if you buy them from them.
