Mercury Marquis Power Windows
Q. Mr. Ciulla, I have two Mercury Grand Marquis LS, a 1993 and 1994. They have 4.6 liter engines, automatic transmissions, fuel injected, ABS, full power, and both have over 100,000 miles. Two of the power window have quit working on the 1993 and one on the 1994. I have pulled the door panel off and inspected the windows and the motors.
The motors appear to use a wire cable system to move the windows up and down and the ends of the cables are attached to the windows with plastic clips of some kind. I would like to buy a new motor and replace these myself but I can not figure out exactly how to do this and how the cables attach to the windows, etc.
The whole procedure looks rather complicated and I can't seem to find any procedure or description in the usual manuals such as Haynes. Got a feel this is one of those jobs which has to be done in just a certain way or it is a nightmare, might be one anyway. Could you please provide me with some information on how to do this job.
Regards,
DerryA. It's really easy, once you know how to do it. The hardest thing is you might have to drill new holes for the new motor/regulator assembly.
Removal
- Remove door armrest, door trim panel and water shield.
- Remove two window attaching nuts and remove window.
- Disconnect power motor wiring connector.
- Remove three 1/4-inch rivets attaching motor bracket to inner panel and two 1/4-inch rivets attaching lower bracket of regulator to inner panel. Use drift punch to knock out center pins for each rivet. Using a 1/4-inch diameter drill, drill out remainder of rivet. Use care not to enlarge sheet metal holes in the door inner panel.
- Remove two upper regulator retaining nuts.
- Remove regulator from door.

Installation
- Lubricate regulator mechanism with Teflon® Lubricant D2AZ-19590-A (ESB-M1C111-A) or equivalent.
- Install regulator into access hole in inner panel.
- Position regulator using upper regulator studs and tabs on motor mounting bracket.
- Install rivets attaching regulator to door inner panel (1/4-20 X 1/2 inch screw and 1/4-20 nut and washer assemblies or equivalent metric fasteners may be used as alternates).
- Install two upper regulator retaining nuts.
- Install door glass.
- Adjust glass.
- Install water shield and door trim panel.
Caution: When servicing regulator assembly, regulator cable tension must not be altered. Cable tension is preset at production. Improper adjustment may result in premature regulator failure or erratic operation.
