Ford F-150 Shifts Too Fast
Q. Yes my friend, I have a 1995 Ford F-150 with a 302 V-8 automatic transmission it has 56,000 miles. I just got this truck and it seems like it is shifting way to soon. I will be driving 25-30 and will all ready be in third gear or overdrive if I didn't lock it out. I do a lot of in town driving and it does a lot of jumping from gear to gear and sometimes a little jumpy in between. What can I do?
Thank You,
JimA. First thing I would do is adjust the Throttle Valve Cable. Here's how:
- Set parking brake, then place shift selector in NEUTRAL position. Do not check or set Throttle Valve (TV) pressure in PARK.
- Remove air cleaner cover and inlet tube from throttle body inlet to access throttle lever and cable assembly.
- Using a wide blade screwdriver, pry cable assembly out of grommet on throttle body lever.
- Ensure plastic block slides freely on notched rod.
- While holding throttle lever firmly against its idle stop, push grooved pin into grommet on throttle lever as far as it will go. NOTE: While pushing pin into grommet, ensure throttle lever does not move away from idle stop.
- Ensure grooved pin is fully installed while holding throttle lever firmly against idle stop.
If the adjustment doesn't fix it, the throttle valve pressure will need to be adjusted. Since this requires a transmission pressure gauge it should be done by a transmission shop or Ford dealer.
