Ford Probe Shifts Wrong
Q. Hello Vincent, Hope you can give me some advice. I purchased a 1993 Ford Probe for my son. It had 120,000 miles on it. The car has an automatic transmission and a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder. Initially, the transmission would shift hard from second to third. Also, it would not start all the time in PARK, so I suspect the interlock switch is messed up.
Now, it will only go forward in all gears, even reverse and neutral!! Do you think this would be a costly repair job? I know nothing about automatic transmissions, but have worked extensively on replacing engines, etc. so I can attempt some minor repairs myself.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
FrankA. I would check the shift cable first and make sure it is moving into all the gears. It's possible it just needs an adjustment.
- Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove floor console.
- Shift selector lever to Park position, then remove position indicator mount.
- Slide lock cover back, then disconnect set button.
- Slide selector lever to adjust Park position, then connect set button.
- Slide lock cover to lock set button in place.
- Reverse procedure to install. Torque position indicator mounting screws to 17-26 in lbs.
If that doesn't do it you'll need to take it to a transmission shop.
