Ford Probe Shifts Wrong

Q. Hello Vincent, Hope you can give me some advice. I purchased a 1993 Ford Probe for my son. It had 120,000 miles on it. The car has an automatic transmission and a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder. Initially, the transmission would shift hard from second to third. Also, it would not start all the time in PARK, so I suspect the interlock switch is messed up.

Now, it will only go forward in all gears, even reverse and neutral!! Do you think this would be a costly repair job? I know nothing about automatic transmissions, but have worked extensively on replacing engines, etc. so I can attempt some minor repairs myself.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Frank

A. I would check the shift cable first and make sure it is moving into all the gears. It's possible it just needs an adjustment.

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove floor console.
  2. Shift selector lever to Park position, then remove position indicator mount.
  3. Slide lock cover back, then disconnect set button.
  4. Slide selector lever to adjust Park position, then connect set button.
  5. Slide lock cover to lock set button in place.
  6. Reverse procedure to install. Torque position indicator mounting screws to 17-26 in lbs.

If that doesn't do it you'll need to take it to a transmission shop.
