GMC Safari Transmission ID Q. Hi, I have a 1993 GMC Safari 4.3 liter V-6. My question is, first of all my transmission just blew up its automatic however I'm not sure which model it is as I know there is an electronic introduced that year yet also I believe they still have the 700 model. Is there a way I can tell what transmission I have so that I can salvage one from another car?

I have 4 speeds, Overdrive, Drive, second, first, Neutral, Reverse and Park. I don't really have any idea how I can tell. I believe there is a difference of one letter in the VIN being either a Z or W but I don't know if that has anything to do with it. BY THE WAY its rear wheel drive not AWD.

A. The electronic transmission will have a big wire harness coming out of the case on the passenger side of the transmission above the pan line.
