Toyota Camry Charcoal Canister

Q. Hi, I recently had to replace the charcoal canister in my 1999 Toyota Camry that has a little over 24,000 miles on it. Unfortunately my three year warranty had expired and the extended warranty did not cover this. Toyota claimed that the canister was contaminated from me 'topping off'.

I explained to them that my 'topping off' consisted of rounding to the next 50 cents which I hardly think would cause any damage. I would like to know if this indeed would cause over $600.00 worth of damage to this part and if it is so sensitive, why aren't there caution/warnings in the manuals and on your gas tanks.

Also, now that it has been replaced and I no longer 'top off', how long should this charcoal canister last?

Thanks for your help,
Judy M.

A. $600.00 to replace the Evaporative Emission Control Canister?? The Evaporative Emission Control Canister for your car is P/N# 77740-06062 and lists from a Toyota dealer for $260.07. Figure in the half an hour labor to put it in and you might break $300.00.

Why did they replace it? Was the Check Engine Light (MIL) on? If it was, was there a code stored? What was that code? I would like some more details on this. Something don't seem right.

You didn't do anything wrong and you can tell them I said so.
