Turbocharging A Toyota Tercel
Q. Hi Vince, I am in the process of digging through every page of your site. It is really a great service that you provide. I have fixed many problems with my car from the information here on your site. I have a question with regards to a turbocharger and a 1990 Toyota Tercel. Would it be possible to put one in?
I will for sure rebuild it before attempting to, but I don't know if even after that, the engine can take it or blow. It will have say probably 200,000 kilometers (125,000 miles) on it by the time I get around to it. 5 speed manual transmission. No A/C, No P/S. Speaking of which, would a supercharger be more simpler/efficient? Since there are lots of room without all those accessories.
Also would you have guides on maximizing the fuel economy? besides the filter and such. Like gapping the spark plug a tad bit wider (it has new wires and cap on it and resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, a lot less than specs is that okay?) Ignition timing?
Thank you very much!
ChangA. I guess you could. The problem would be in finding a turbocharger that will fit. If you do some checking around you might find someone who makes a turbocharging kit for it. A supercharger would be better since they don't have "turbo lag" and you do have the room. Again, the problem would be finding a kit to fit your car.
I wrote an article, Gas Saving Tips and Suggestions that will help you with your second question.
