Honda Accord Carburetor
Q. Good day Mr Helpful, Here are the questions from Malaysia:
My car's info:
1982 Honda Accord
Carburetted 1600 cc
Manual transmission
300,000 km (186,400 miles)The carburetor is believed to be the original since the car was 'born'. I notice the fuel is dripping off from the carburetor. I have asked the worker about it and he said the carburetor may require replacement. The cost of the original spare parts would cost around RM800 (US $210.00)! I think it is too expensive. Can you please advise me the reasonable price I should pay for a new carburetor?
My car is difficult to start during morning and also when the engine is hot (after a drive for approximately 30 minutes). After it got started up in the morning, I cannot run the car immediately because when I step on the accelerator pad, the engine will shut down. I have to wait for around three to five minutes to let the engine run at idle then only I can drive it out from the parking space.
Can you please advise me what is the problem that cause this happens. You professional advices are much appreciated. Thank you.
Yours truly,
soon tet hengA. Before I condem the carburetor I would want to be very sure it needed replacement. A cursory look at a fuel leak just doesn't make it. If the leak is, in fact, from the carburetor and you can not get replacement gaskets, then it will need to be replaced.
Outside of the leak, it sounds like it's very possible the air/fuel mixture is too lean and the carburetor needs an adjustment. It's also possible the fuel pump is weak and not supplying the engine with the volume of fuel it needs. I would want to check both of these before I recommend a new carburetor.
Actually, $210.00 is not a bad price for a rebuilt Honda carburetor. A new one from Honda is probably about $600.00. But I would find a mechanic that can adjust this carburetor and let him do a through check and if it does need a carburetor, then go ahead and do it.
