Ranger 4.0 Built Broken
Q. Hello; My name is Tom and I have a question, I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 4x4 Supercab. It is a 6 cylinder with a 4.0 liter engine and has 26,000 miles on it. I have had no trouble with it but last week after changing the oil the engine sounded like a diesel engine for quite a while, and then it subsided some.
I took it in to the Ford dealership service department as I thought the engine was going out of it or something, and they couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary. The technician who was very helpful gave me a copy of the printout he had obtained from Ford, and it stated that some engines in Ford Ranger from 1998-2000 models with 4.0 liter engines sometimes develop what they call a marble noise and said that a customer may describe it as a diesel sound which my did.
They said this is a normal thing and cleaning the carbon etc, would not help it. It is still doing it some. I am concerned as to why this just started, and with only 4,000 miles before my factory warranty is over will this engine quit.
The vehicle runs fine, but it is annoying and has me concerned as to the life of this engine. I talked to the dealer about an extended warranty which will take me to 6 years and or 75,000 miles for $1100.00. I asked him if it would cover engines but as the print out stated replacing engine for this problem was not recommended tells me they won't do you have any answers or suggestions. Have you experienced this problem or situation before? I would like some feedback.
Thank you,
TomA. I have seen this bulletin from Ford and I have had three or four customers come in complaining about it. I always send them to Ford because they are still in warranty and Ford is obligated to deal with it.
Basically it is a design flaw in the engine. By placing the blame in the driver and his habits it shifts blame from Ford to you. When you bought the truck, did they tell you that you have to run the engine at 3,500 rpm for two or three miles every day to prevent engine damage from carbon buildup? I don't think they did.
It used to be that General Motors were the only cars in the world built broken. I can see a possible class action lawsuit coming out of this one.
