His Wife Told Him So

Q. I have a 2000 Durango 4.7 liter engine. What happens is: While running the vehicle jerks, then loss of power for a few minutes (acts like a fuel problem), then shuts down (stalls). (Always when the wife has it and in traffic, which just adds to the frustration. She wanted an import, but I grew up in a Dodge family.)

After about 20 minutes it will restart and act just fine. Engine check light goes off after a few starts. I have had it in two different Authorized Dodge Dealers only to have the problem pop-up again and again and minus $200-$400 each trip. I have replaced the plugs, cleaned the fuel system, changed out a couple of sensors, and battery test out just fine. I am now banking on the fuel pump, but have not done it as of yet (wanted to hear what others think).

After some research I did the code test thing by turning the key on/off 3-times, and the code I get is 32. However, not sure what that is telling me. Any input that you may have will be very helpful.

A. Well, if this only happens when your wife is driving it, get her the import she wants (Mercedes M Class would be nice and still, technically, a Dodge) and you drive the Dodge. That would solve all the problems and make everyone happy.

Chrysler does not provide a procedure for retrieving or clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) on that truck without a scan tool. So I don't know how you got a code 32 or what it means since the OBD-II uses P Codes. On the pre-OBD-II diagnostics, a code 32 would refer to a problem with the EGR system. Something which could cause the problem you are having.

There were a couple of TSBs related to engine problems on your engine. One calls for the reprogramming of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), TSB number 18-001-01 dated January 26, 2001. The other refers to a Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) that may be rubbing against the engine, TSB number 08-22-00 Rev A dated August 4, 2000.

It would be very helpful if they told you what DTCs they got from the PCM.
