Chevy Vega Cruise Control

Q. Dear Sir, I was wondering if you could tell me when cruise control was introduced on vehicles, namely Chevrolet. Also if you could tell me, was it an option on any early 70"s Vega? It is a matter of a court deposition. Be looking forward to hearing from you!

Thanks,
Darrin.

A. Actually the first cruise control system was patented in 1945 by Ralph Teetor. There were a lot of different names for the device, "Controlmatic", "Touchomatic", "Pressomatic" and "Speedostat". It finally became known as "Cruise Control".

It was first offered in the 1958 Chrysler Imperial, New Yorker and Windsor. In 1960 it was offered on all Cadillac models. For more on Ralph Teetor go to: Ralph Teetor - Invented Cruise Control and Ralph R. Teetor: A Biography.

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm 95% sure that cruise control was not an option on any Chevy Vega.
