Removing An Old A/C System
Q. I have an 1984 Ford Mustang 2.3 liter Turbo 350 GT 5 speed with 122,000 miles. I bought the car and the A/C did not work. After inspection, I noticed that the compressor was not bolted to the mounting bracket and only one of the compressor hoses was hooked up.
At this time, I would like to remove the compressor and possibly the entire A/C system. Since there is only one hose hooked to the compressor, should a refrigerant leak be a concern? Can I safely remove this myself or does it have to be done by a certified mechanic?
A. Well, if there is only one line connected to the compressor where there should be two, I would say that the chances of there being Freon in the system are just about zero. A missing line is as big a leak as you can get. So just pull off whatever you need to and be done with it.
