Same Old Grind... Again

Q. Thanks for all the help online. This is a question about the same old grind article that I read on your site. I just bought a used Volkswagen Van and when I shift into third I feel and hear a grinding.

Any advice on what it is and how much I should spend on a fix, estimate. Also, is this something that I can do myself??

Thanks in advance.
Jay

A. If it is just third gear that grinds, then it is something internal to the transmission. Probably a bad synchronizer. What a synchronizer does is allow a smooth transition between gears moving at different speeds. When they go bad, you get grinding in that one gear. There are synchronizers for each gear except first and reverse.

The clutch is not adjustable (guessing it is a fairly late model van) so unless the clutch itself is worn out, there's not much you can do with it. If it were a clutch problem, it would grind in all gears.
