Chevy S-10 Blazer When To Use 4WD

Q. Hello, I have a 1984 Chevy S-10 Blazer 4x4 Sport with the 2.8 liter V-6 and an automatic transmission. It has switch 2 hi, 4 hi, 4 low. Are there any restrictions using those modes, or I can drive on 4x4 all times?

Best regards,
Arturs

A. The only time you should use the Four Wheel Drive (4WD) is when you need it. Driving in 4WD on dry flat roads puts extra stress on the drive train and uses a lot more fuel. In snow and ice it's good for the extra traction, but you need to keep in mind that while you have more traction, you still need to allow more room for braking. 4WD does nothing for braking. 4 high is good for off road on fairly level ground while 4 low is good for pulling a load or climbing a fairly steep hill off road.

Common sense will tell you what to use and when. If there is no advantage to being in 4WD, then don't use it.
