Groaning Grand Am

Q. This car is a 1992 Pontiac Grand Am, 3.3 liter V-6 engine. Automatic transmission, 117000 miles, Fuel injected, ABS brakes, power steering, A/C and cruise included. It does have rack and pinion steering. The problem I have only seems to occur doing colder weather.

Once the temperature gets around 50° I hear a type of creaking noise somewhere in the front end when I hit bumps or dips in the road. The creaking noise reminds me of an old mattress or couch that has squeaky springs, but a little throatier.

The colder the temperature the worse the noise. In the summer this never occurs. I have replaced the struts but that did not help. Any ideas on this?

Thanks,
Chad

A. Your car sounds like me, when the temperature gets below 50° my joints start creaking and groaning.

The noise is coming from the bushings in the front end. When they get older, like me, they start making noise at lower temperatures. Short of replacing them, you can give them a good spraying of CRC 5-56 or WD-40. It will work into the bushings over time and help eliminate the noise.
