F-150 Transmission
Q. My mother just bought a 1989 Ford F-150 from an individual. After about two weeks of owning it, the truck will no longer go in reverse or 5th gear. It moves fine from 1-4th, but will not go in Rev. or 5th. A couple questions please.
I have no automotive experience (with exception to oil, plugs, etc.). Is this something a beginner could fix? Do you have an idea what could be the problem? Would you have a rough estimate on parts? Labor? Should she drive it? Any help is greatly appreciated. I read you a lot, given the fact I'm trying to learn to fix things myself, and you are a VERY intelligent mechanic with an impressive bio.
Thanking you in advance.
GreggA. I wish I had better news for you Gregg, but the problem is inside the transmission. Fifth and reverse share some of the same parts so if both are gone, then the transmission has to be opened up and rebuilt.
Since there are special tools, techniques and shim measurements required, this is not a job for a DIY.
