Questions and Answers

Sonoma Terms

Q. Dear Vincent, Recently I bought a 2000 GMC Sonoma. However, I'm not familiar with some of the terms used in the owner's manual, which applies to several Sonoma model configuration. So, here are my stats and questions:

2000 GMC Sonoma, Ext Cab, 2-wheel (rear) drive
4.3 liter engine
Automatic transmission
Miles = 24,000
Fuel injected
ABS brakes
P/S A/C Cruise control
Rack & pinion steering

  1. What's a transfer case, where is it located, and do I have one of these on a 2-wheel drive car?
  2. What's a front differential, where is it located, and do I have one of these on a 2-wheel drive car?
  3. How do I determine whether or not I have a limited-slip differential?

Thanks,
Karl

A. A transfer case is used to supply motive power to the front and rear wheels. It is located on the back of the transmission and has drive shafts that go to the front and rear differentials. Since your truck is a two wheel drive truck, you do not have a transfer case.

The front differential is very similar to the rear differential in that it transfers power from the drive shaft out to the wheels. Again, since you have a two wheel drive truck, you do not have a front differential.

The best way to determine if you have a Positraction,or more commonly known as a limited slip differential you can look at the RPO label on your truck If you see the code G80 you have a limited slip differential. if you see another G code it will indicate:

GT4 Rear Axle: 3.73 Ratio
GT5 Rear Axle: 4.10 Ratio
GU4 Rear Axle: 3.08 Ratio
GU6 Rear Axle: 3.42 Ratio
G80 Rear Axle: Positraction, Limited Slip

The location of the RPO label varies so if you can't find it, ask your dealer and he can tell you where it is on your truck.
